Scrap Rampal power plant: national oil, gas committee

Leaders of the national committee to protect oil, gas, mineral resources, power and ports on Tuesday again called on the government to refrain from implementing coal-based Rampal thermal power plant to save the Sunderbans from destruction.
The Dhaka City unit of the national committee made the call at a protest rally in the capital in front of National Press Club to drum up support to its five-day Dhaka-Rampal road march in March 10-15.
The rally was followed by a march towards Bahadur Shah Park to press home its seven points demands including scraping the proposed Rampal power plant.
Prior to the march, the member secretary of the national committee Anu Muhammad called on the government to immediately stop the proposed Rampal Thermal Power Plant which would be catastrophic for Sunderbans, the biggest mangrove forest in the world.
Referring to a report where finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhit observed that it would not be possible to drop the Rampal project although it would do some damage to the Sunderbans.
Anu questioned why it would not be possible to drop the project and for whose interests.
He also urged the government to bin the proposed projects in the area including the Orion Power Plant within March 9.
Otherwise the committee would hold the five-day long march to compel the government to cancel the projects, he added.
Chaired by committees Dhaka City unit convener Jahangir Alam Fazlu, the rally was addressed, among others, by its leaders Zufikar Ali and Ruhin Hossain Prince.
The central leaders of the committee, Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Quamrul Ahsan, Firoz Ahmed, Khan Asaduzzaman Masum, Kishore Roy, Sajedul Haque Rubel, Subal Sarker, Nazrul Islam, Shahidul Islam Sabuj, Fakhruddin Kabir and others attended the programme.
