BDR mutiny day observed
The 7th anniversary of the February 25-26, 2009 rebellion of soldiers of Bangladesh Rifles, now renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh, was observed on Thursday with due respect.
On February 25, 2009, BDR soldiers took weapons against their officers deputed from army at Durbar Hall at the paramilitary headquarters in Dhaka during BDR Week.
In the two-day rebellion, 75 people – 57 army officers, a retired army official, wives of two army officers, nine BDR soldiers, five civilians, an army soldier and a police constable – were killed.
The families and colleagues of slain military officers observed separate programmes marking the day.
Inter-Services Public Relations in statement said that the seventh anniversary of the killings of ‘unarmed army soldiers’ by ‘some derailed uncontrolled members in the then BDR’ was observed with due respect.
President’s military secretary Major General Abul Hossain and prime minister’s military secretary Major General Mia Md Zainul Abedin on the behalf of head of state and government respectively placed floral wreaths at a monument built at the Banani military graveyard in the memory of the 57 slain army officers.
Three services chiefs — General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq, Vice Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed and Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar –– senior home secretary Md Mozammel Haque Khan and Border Guard Bangladesh director general major general Aziz Ahmed, among others, placed wreaths at the monument.
The victim families of slain officers also visited the graveyard and offered prayer for their dear once.
Special prayers were offered at all the mosques in the cantonments.
Prayer sessions will be held at BGB headquarters in Dhaka this afternoon and all units of the frontier force seeking eternal peace of the departed souls to mark
the day.
The victim families organised special prayer at Banani Old DOHS community centre after Maghrib prayers, the families said.
