Abul’s right hand fingers, palm trimmed

Surgeons on Saturday trimmed the fingers and palm on the right hand of Abul Bajander.
The trimming took place at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn and plastic surgery department a week after root and bark-like warts were cut off from the fingers and palm on his right hand on February 20, said doctors.
Bajander was taken to the operation theater for post-operation dressing when the surgeons trimmed some tissues that grew afresh, burn and plastic surgery department coordinator Samanta Lal Sen told New Age.
He said that Bajander was in good condition.
He said that the 25-year old patient’s right hand would be under observation for two more weeks before removing the warts from his left hand.
Bajander would need a series of surgical excisions to remove the growths from his hands and legs, he said. He said that the surgeons expected that the patient would be able to use the fingers on his right hand.
He has been suffering from epidermodysphesia verruciformis, a rare heritable disease.
The disease is caused by ‘human papilloma virus infection with a propensity for developing malignant skin tumours.
In short, the infection is called  HPV infection.
DMCH has been providing his treatment free of cost since admission on January 30.
The heavy and massive growths that began to appear 10 years ago smothered his hands and legs.
He had to give up pulling rickshaw, his livelihood, as he slowly he lost his ability to work.
He was admitted to DMCH with dozens of roots each up to three-inch long on his hands and several smaller ones on his legs.
Colloquially the disease is called ‘Tree Man syndrome.’
