Retail prices of onion, garlic increase

The prices of onion and garlic witnessed a further rise on the city’s retail markets over the week.
Traders failed to show any reasonable excuse to increase the prices of onion and garlic but wholesalers and retailers blamed each other for the rise.
Retailers said that the prices of the items increased on the retail market as wholesalers charged extra price. The wholesalers on the other hand said that a slight supply shortage caused the rise in prices and claimed that the increase of wholesale prices was minor while the retailers were charging high.
The price of onion increased by Tk 5-Tk 7 a kg and the item was being sold at Tk 35-Tk 38 a kg over the week ending Friday.
The price of imported garlic increased by Tk 10 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 210-Tk 220 a kg while local garlic was retailing at Tk 100-Tk 160 a kg on the day.
The prices of vegetables remained unchanged during the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 30-Tk 35 a kg, bitter gourd at Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg, cauliflower at Tk 20 a piece, cabbage at Tk 20 a piece, beans at Tk 30-Tk 40 a kg, cucumber at Tk 30 a kg, tomato at Tk 20-Tk 25 a kg, papaya at Tk 25 a kg and green chilli at Tk 60 a kg over the week.
Potato was selling at Tk 12-Tk 18 a kg over the week.
The price of broiler chicken remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 155-Tk 160 a kg while the locally-bred hens were selling at Tk 280-Tk 320 a kg on Friday.
Egg price also remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 36 a hali (four pieces) in the city on the day.
The price of mutton remained high and the item was selling at Tk 600 a kg over the week while beef was selling at Tk 380-Tk 400 a kg.
The red lentil price remained unchanged and the fine variety of the item was selling at Tk 130 a kg while the imported one (coarse variety) was selling at Tk 95 a kg over the week.
The price of unpacked soya bean oil remained unchanged and the fine quality of the item was selling at Tk 88-Tk 90 a kg on Friday while palm oil was selling at Tk 65-Tk 67 a kg on the day.
A one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 96-Tk 98.
The price of a five-litre container remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 440-Tk 460 on the city’s retail markets on Friday.
The price of sugar remained high and it was selling at Tk 50-Tk 52 a kg over the week.
The prices of fish remained unchanged over the week. Rohita was selling at Tk 200-Tk 320 a kg, Katla at Tk 200-Tk 300 a kg, Pangas at Tk 120-Tk 280 a kg and Tilapia at Tk 120-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The coarse variety of miniket rice was retailing at Tk 46-Tk 48 a kg while fine variety of miniket was selling at Tk 48-Tk 52 a kg. The fine variety of Najirshail rice was selling at Tk 54-Tk 58 a kg over the week. The fine variety of BR-28 rice was selling at Tk 45-Tk 46 a kg and the coarse variety was selling at Tk 40-Tk 42 a kg on Friday.
