3 women, cricket team get Nasreen Memorial Award
Three women and an institution received Nasreen Memorial Award-2016 for their outstanding contribution to woman empowerment, human rights, fight against woman oppression and sexual assaults and other forms of repressions.
Actionaid handed them over crests, certificates and cash at a programme held at Chhayanaut auditorium in the city on Sunday.
The award has been named after Actionaid country director Nasreen Haque who died in a road accident in 2006.
‘Annually three individuals receive the award but in case of unique accomplishment, the jury board may elect an institution under a special category,’ said one of the organisers, Nurun Nahar Begum.
Bangladesh National Women’s Cricket Team—as an institution— was awarded for its role of breaking traditional conception that sports are for men folks. Other awardees are: Marjina Khatun, a physically challenged entrepreneur of Bera in Pabna. She was selected for her extraordinary performance in woman employment and empowerment. Razia Khatun of Ghoraghat in Dinajpur received the award for her assertive role in local politics and Morium Begum of Mithapukur in Rangpur for her contribution to curb gender violence and oppression of women folks.
Former adviser to the caretaker government and chairperson of Actionaid Bangladesh board of trustees M. Hafizuddin Khan, board member Monsur Ahmed Choudhuri, country director Farah Kabir, executive director of Nijera Kori Khushi Kabir were present, among others, at the award distribution ceremony.
