Customs intel seizes Porsche car

Customs intelligence on Wednesday seized a Porsche Cayenne jeep from Dhaka’s Gulshan area on charge of customs duty evasion.
A team of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate of the National Board of Revenue confiscated the jeep from the house of Pacific Group managing director Shafiul Azam Mohsin at Gulshan-1.
Shafiul has been using the 3189cc luxury jeep for more than one year with British registration plate SF05AUM and he failed to show any legal document to the customs officials during
irrelevant issues in a ludicrous manner to hinder the lawful activities, authorities, and responsibilities of the BTRC. Especially, such letters cause impediment to national interests and, hence, obstacle from the end of GP is not rational at all,’ said the BTRC letter on Wednesday.
Asked about the issue, GP in a statement to New the drive, CIID officials said.
According to the primary estimate by the CIID, the price of the jeep may be more than Tk 4 crore including customs duties and taxes.
A team of CIID led by its deputy director ASM Shamimur Rahman conducted the drive and seized the jeep.
Shamim told New Age that they were suspecting that the jeep was brought in the country under the ‘carnet de passage’ facility and plying the city roads violating the condition of the facility.
Under the carnet facility, tourists can bring (import) their used cars in the country without paying any duties on condition that they will send back (re-export) the cars to the country of origin within one year.
Details of the vehicle can be confirmed after further investigation, the official said.
According to the CIID, some 300 luxury cars were imported by tourists, mostly foreign nationals of Bangladeshi origin, from 2010 to 2012 under the facility. Of those, 150 were not re-exported.
The CIID has already seized four luxury cars including the Porsche so far.
On Monday, customs intelligence seized a BMW-X5 jeep from Gulshan on the same ground.
