Prices of onion, garlic go up
The prices of local varieties of onion and garlic went up on the retail market in Dhaka over the week ending Friday.
Traders said the prices of the items rose as the demand for onion and garlic increased before Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla new year which was celebrated on Thursday.
The price of the local variety of onion increased by Tk 5 a kilogram and the item was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 a kg while the imported onion was selling at Tk 25-Tk 30 a kg over the week.
The price of imported garlic remained unchanged on the kitchen market as the item was selling at Tk 200 a kg while the local garlic price increased by Tk 10 a kg and it was retailing at Tk 80-Tk 110 a kg over the week.
On Friday, both supply of and demand for hilsa, the most favourite item on the menu on Pahela Baishakh, dropped in the city markets, but the price remained almost same like the day before Pahela Baishakh when the price of the fish skyrocketed.
Hilsa weighing around 800-900 grams was selling at Tk 1,300- Tk 1,500 apiece while the fish weighing around 500 grams to 600 grams was selling at Tk 600 to Tk 700 apiece at the Karwan Bazar kitchen market on Friday.
The item weighing 1 kg to 1.2 kg was not seen in the city markets on the day.
Hilsa weighing around 1.5 kg was sold at Tk 4,000 apiece on Tuesday.
The prices of broiler, beef and red lentil remained high over the week.
Beef was selling at Tk 390-Tk 420 a kg while mutton at Tk 600 a kg on Friday.
The price of broiler chicken remained high and the item was selling at Tk 155-Tk 165 a kg while the locally-bred hens were selling at Tk 280-Tk 320 a kg on Friday.
The price of red lentil remained high and the fine variety of the item was selling at Tk 150-Tk 155 a kg while the imported ones (coarse variety) were selling at Tk 110 a kg over the week.
Egg was selling at Tk 34 a hali (four pieces) on Friday.
The price of sugar remained high and the item was selling at Tk 55 a kg over the week.
The price of potato remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 18-Tk 20 a kg over the week.
Vegetable prices remained unchanged over the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 30- Tk 50 a kg, green chilli at Tk 60 a kg, bitter gourds at Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg, beans at Tk 30-Tk 40 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40 a kg, bottle gourd at Tk 40-Tk 50 apiece, okra Tk 40 a kg, tomato at Tk 40 –Tk 50 a kg and papaya at Tk 30 a kg.
The price of unpacked soya bean oil remained unchanged and the fine quality of the item was selling at Tk 88-Tk 90 a kg on Friday while palm oil was selling at Tk 65-Tk 67 a kg on the day.
A one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 96-Tk 98. The price of a five-litre container remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 440-Tk 460 in the city’s retail market on Friday.
The prices of fish remained unchanged over the week. Rohita was selling at Tk 200-Tk 320 a kg, katla at Tk 200-Tk 300 a
kg, pangas at Tk 120-Tk 280 a kg and tilapia at Tk 120-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The coarse variety of miniket rice was retailing at Tk 43-Tk 45 a kg while fine variety of miniket was selling at Tk 46-Tk 50 a kg. The fine variety of najirshail rice was selling at Tk 52-Tk 54 a kg over the week. The fine variety of BR-28 rice was selling at Tk 42-Tk 44 a kg and the coarse variety was selling at Tk 40 kg on Friday.
