Sylhet Nursing College closed for a week

The authorities on Saturday night closed Sylhet Nursing College for a week from today and asked the students to leave the lone dormitory affected by Wednesday’s earthquake that jolted the entire country.
The college principal, Shilpi Chakrabarti, said at the direction of the higher authorities, the institute was closed for a week.
All academic activities, including classes and examinations, would remain suspended for the week, she added.
The authorities had earlier on the day asked the boarders to move to safer place as they were panicked when the four-storey building started shaking during a rainstorm in the morning.
Sylhet Fire Brigade and Civil Defence officials inspected the risky building on Friday, but they did not make any formal comment over its safety still Saturday.
On Wednesday night, the Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital authorities, including the hospital director Brigadier General Abdus Sabur, had said that after visiting the building they did not see any immediate threat to those who were residing in the building.
The college principal said on Saturday that the students were asked to move out of the hostel as panic was prevailing among the students after many cracks had developed.
She, however, added that the building was yet to be declared abandoned and the decision in this regard would be made following suggestions from experts.
‘Examinations of 240 out of 374 students residing in the dormitory are going on. They have asked to move to the staff quarter and even to the academic building while the rests have directed to go home,’ Shilpi Chakrabarti said.
