RESISTING MILITANCY: Movements called for

Pro-Awami League intellectuals on Sunday called for social, cultural and political movements of the pro-independence forces to resist ‘militancy’ and secret killings committed by fundamentalists in the country.
At a discussion marking the 22nd death anniversary of Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam in the city, they also called for complete prohibition of the politics based on religions to build the country imbued with the spirit of liberation war.
Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee and forum for secular Bangladesh and trial of war criminals of 1971 organised the memorial lecture on Jahanara Imam, discussion and distribution of memorial medals.
Liberation War Museum trustee and researcher Mofidul Huq made the memorial lecture on Jahanara Imam.
Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee acting president Shahriar Kabir said that secularism and humanity were being violated across the world from Turkey to Indonesia due to politics based on religions.
Committee vice-president Shyamoli Nasrin Chowdhury said that social movement should be waged to resist the rise of Jamaat activists and their followers.
She alleged that a number of Shibir activists including male and female increased in the country’s educational institutions and other all sectors.
Dhaka University professor Muntassir Mamoon said that there was a little religious tolerance seen in the country and the religions were taking the positions in the cultural arenas.
National University vice chancellor Harun-or-Rashid said that the government was holding trial of war criminals with the mandate of the country’s people.
Committee adviser Justice Syed Amirul Islam, who presided over the function, said that all pro-liberation groups and political parties must be united to forge a movement to build the country imbued with spirit of independence.
The National University, litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq and Mofidul Huq were awarded the Jahanara Imam Memorial medals.
