ZIA CHARITABLE TRUST CASE : Testimony rewritten after defence protests

The Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-3 on Thursday recorded the testimony of a prosecution witness in Zia Charitable Trust case again following protests from the defence counsel who alleged that the previous recording was unlawful.

CPB, SPB hold sit-in to reduce power, gas prices

Left politicians on Tuesday at a sit-in programme in the city called on the Awami League led government to take steps to reduce prices of power and gas which effected from September 1. Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission on August 27 increased the average price of electricity by 2.93 per cent and natural gas by 26.29 per cent at consumer level which effected from September 1.

Univ teachers indulge in corruption: Muhith

Finance minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday said teachers of public universities were indulging in practice of corruptions which should be stopped. His comments were, however, rejected by the teachers who said practice of corruption had been highest in the ministry run by the finance minister himself.

Teachers’ strike paralyses public univs

A strike enforced by public university teachers on Tuesday demanding review of the new pay scale, and a separate pay scale, paralysed universities across the country. The teachers further threatened strike on campuses for an indefinite period.

Floods force closure of 1,130 schools in 8 dists

Severe flooding forced the closure of at least 1130 primary and secondary schools in six northern and two north eastern districts until Tuesday. Education officers said that it was possible that more schools had to go on unscheduled holidays due to widespread flooding.

Cabinet approves new pay structure

The cabinet on Monday approved the new pay structure for the government employees fixing the maximum monthly salary at Tk 86,000, up from Tk 45,000 and the minimum basic pay at Tk 8,250,up from Tk 4,100.

August boom keeps RMG export earnings afloat in 2 months

Country’s export earnings from readymade garment products in two months of the financial year 2015-16 grew by 5.98 per cent to $4.48 billion from $4.23 billion in the same period of the FY 2014-15 as the export of the RMG products boomed in August, the second month of the current financial year.

FAILURE IN DEMONSTRATION : Field-level leaders, activists blame senior leaders

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party blamed ‘fascist attitude of the government for its failure to stage scheduled demonstrations in Dhaka on Sunday, although no senior leaders was seen in the field to join or lead the countrywide demonstrations. Field-level leaders, organisers and activists, however, blamed senior leaders and organisational weakness for the failure.

Jamaat’s nayeb-e-amir, ASG, 11 other leaders arrested

Thirteen leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami including two top leaders were arrested from the capital’s Pallabi area on Monday.

Flood in north persists

The flood situation in the north and central part of the country did not improve on Monday while farmers expressed their worries as the croplands and fisheries farms and ponds remained under water for over the past two weeks.
